I have traced the Orientals in Errol’s pedigree back to the Dandycat, Scintilla and Southview prefixes which is where the origins of the breed lie. Also, through Michant Brown Bomber, Samsara Zanzou, Briarry Isabel Tinkling and Laurentide Brown Prestige he can be traced to Elmtower Bronze Idol who was the first Havana cat in the UK.
Bronze Idol is Errol’s GGGGGGGGGGGGGG-Parent (14 G’s – 13 Greats and a Grand!), and was born on the 14th May 1952. His sire was Tombee or Toynbee, a Seal-point Siamese, and his dam was Elmtower Susannah who was described as an ‘Ebony Oriental’. The dam of both these cats was Tsui Chow, another Seal-point Siamese. The source I used (Ardeleana) does not give the sire of Elmtower Susannah, but information on the HOLCC web site gives him as Pickles, a black moggy, possibly with longish-hair.
Interestingly the great-grand-sire of Briarry Isabel Tinkling is Kallibunker, the foundation of the Cornish Rex breed! Although the gene which produces the Cornish Rex coat is recessive, it is not present in the gene pool of modern Orientals, but the Oriental cat is still on the list of approved outcrosses for Cornish Rex cats.
