PRA stands for Progressive Retinal Atrophy, which is an inherited disease that can lead to blindness. Several forms have been identified, the version that can affect Orientals and Siamese is known as CEP290. To be affected a kitten has to inherit the gene from both parents – in other words it’s a recessive gene. There is more information about this at iCatCare and Langford.
Thankfully there is now a gene test for PRA. Eadlin is negative by inheritance – I tested her mother Lola, Tina tested her father Rudi and both were negative. I tested Basil when he arrived and he also is negative.
I got a bit of a surprise when I tested Tia and found she is a carrier (probably from her grandfather Pan), but she will only be mated to negative males, so none of her kittens will be affected.
